Nearly two decades after enjoying one of the best one-off hits of the late ’90s, with a career second act that included songwriting for Smash Mouth, singing the Nationwide jingle, and suffering through a run of personal tragedy too overwhelming to even contemplate, Jennifer Paige finally made an album entirely on her own terms.
Starflower is absolutely fantastic, a collection of glittering, theatrical, highly personal synth-pop barnstormers that sounds so natural for Paige, you’d swear she was raised in icy northern Europe, not sunny Marietta, Georgia. And yes, she does include a ghostly, stripped-down ballad reimagining of the ever-enduring “Crush”, as if to say yes, I am THAT Jennifer Paige, but no, I’m not THAT Jennifer Paige anymore.
